Childish Gambino Surprises Chicago High School Students at Chance's Open Mike Event

For the past few years, Chance has been hosting an "Open Mike" event for the kids of Chicago's south side. It's an endearing and much appreciated event that's one of the many reasons we love Chance. And one of the traditions of the event, held at Harold Washington Library, is that it often features surprise special appearances. Everyone from Kanye West to Big Sean to Vic Mensa have made appearances. But last night, somehow felt the most special. Chance said the next artist "needs no introduction" and then as soon as Childish Gambino's "this is America" started playing, the auditorium went absolutely nuts. Maybe it's because this is one of the first live performances of this massive hit, or the fact that Gambino has no real ties to Chicago, or maybe it's because the general public had no reason to know Glover was even in the city, but the crowd lost their damn minds. It's great to see such a deserving community blessed with such an incredible surprise. Check out the footage below!
