Pitchfork Music Festival Spotlight: Melkbelly

Melkbelly

From: Chicago, IL     Band since: 2014     Genre: Noise Rock

Melkbelly's sound is often described as noise rock, however such a broad term can't doesn't justify a band which such a unique and diverse sound. We like to thing of them as part Lightning Bolt, part Oh Sees, and part Speedy Ortiz. In fact, They're signed to Sadie Dupuis' Wax Nine Records (for which they released their second LP in 2017, called Nothing Valley). The Pilsen quartet have been regulars around Chicago's DIY music scene since 2014, and have grown into one of the cities most exciting acts. Interestingly enough, the band is actually made up of a set of brothers and a married couple. Vocalist and guitarist Miranda Winters, and guitarist Bart Winters are married, and Bart's younger brother, Liam, is on bass (drummer James Wetzel is the only member not related to the rest of the band).

Since their sophomore release in October, they've achieved quite the amount of success. The album received generally positive reviews, and the bad secured a spot opening for the Foo Fighters when they play Wrigley Field on July 29th. It will undoubtedly be the biggest show for the band to date, with one of the worlds biggest bands, at one of the most renowned landmarks in the city of Chicago. And of course, you'll want to make it to the fest as early as possible on Friday to make sure you catch their set at 1:45. We can guarantee it will be worth your while. Familiarize yourself with the band by checking out their complete Audiotree session (above), their video for "Off The Lot" (also above), as well as the rest of Nothing Valley (below).
